El Dorado Dry Lake Bed Styled Shoot // WPPI 2017 // k.H.a. Lifestyle Photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

March 4, 2017 By //  by kate

WPPI‘s annual conference is (like many) in Las Vegas each year, and is one of the biggest of the industry.

This year, I flew down with Capri, the amazing photographer and creative behind Capri Aristry Photography, and we dove in head first.

Although the conference started on Monday, we got in on Saturday afternoon, because, well, Vegas.

Capri’s brother in law picked us and our outrageous amount of luggage up at McCarran, we hit up Whole Foods and the liquor store for room snacks and cocktails, dumped our stuff in our room at the MGM and off we went.

The next day, after getting breakfast at the Wynn’s buffet, we headed out to the dry lake bed of El Dorado.

Capri set up a loosely styled shoot out for anyone who was in town and wanted to get together to shoot before the crazy of the conference started, talking her brother in law and his wife (and her friends) into modeling for us, during the Super Bowl, no less.

For those of y’all not in the photography world, a shoot out is where a bunch of photographers all photograph the same models. It’s a fun atmosphere, you can bounce ideas off of industry colleagues, network, and above all, get to get creative.

Ophelia, Capri’s sister in law, talked a few of her friends into coming out as well, and tapped on some of her connections for florals.

Enter Mylo.

I got to ride out to El Droado with Mylo and lemme tell ya, this woman is AMAZING.

She’s a killer florist, wonderful woman, and all around kicks ass. If you’re in Vegas and need florals, you HAVE to get in touch with her. She owns Mylofleur Floral Designs, and everything she does is gorgeous. (she also plays piano for Cirque du Soleil.)

One of Mylo’s friends is a fashion designer, and she had the foresight to bring a couple of the Herbio Brown couture gowns with her.

The light in the desert is unlike anything else. I can’t wait to get back and get my camera out again.

I most definitely cannot wait to get Mylo in front of my camera again either.

To my fellow photographers, (and, anyone else who may be heading to Vegas) I’d definitely suggest making a trip next year to the WPPI conference. The photography industry is always changing, it was nice to learn new things and connect with amazing photographers. The site Vegas.com has awesome hotel and flight package deals if your heading that way for any other conferences that might be happening this year.

Weekend In Review | k.H.a.lifestyle photography | Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

November 21, 2016 By //  by kate

Friday night took us downtown to Nationwide Arena to watch the BlueJackets take on The Rangers, (we won, btw) Jeff and two of his brothers were off to schmooze in AEP’s corporate box, so Mariah and I took our tickets for a gals night… great game,  bookend-ed by drinks at Gordon Beirsch made for a great Friday evening.

Every year the female contingent of our family here in Ohio spends the Saturday before Thanksgiving kicking off (and in some cases completely finishing) their Christmas shopping.  Due the fact that until a few months ago I lived in Oregon I’ve never been able to partake in the Heitkamp Ladies Shopping Day.

This year, I was all in. We started the morning with everyone converging on my sister in law’s to game plan our day, then as all mornings start, we hit Starbucks for our liquid energy and we were off… Target, Toys R’ Us, Hobby Lobby (LOVEEEE Hobby Lobby), fast stop for lunch, then back at it, Kohls & ended at the Polaris Fashion Place Mall.

Largely, I was along for the ride, as Jeff and I plan on utilizing the fine folks of Amazon for the bulk of our Christmas shopping so we don’t have to schlepp gifts back to Portland with us, or mess around with shipping. Christmas decorations & household decor on the other hand…  We’re finally to to the point that we’re ready to start decorating here, so the timing of a girls day at Hobby Lobby was just about perfect. I can’t wait to start decorating for Christmas, which will take place much to Jeff’s chagrin next Sunday, when we get back from our Thanksgiving celebration at his parents.

Sunday our littlest nephew and God son Connor turned one, so we all converged on Greg and Meredith’s to celebrate the little dude, whom when presented with his little cake to smash was just not quite sure what we wanted him to do with it.

We wrapped up the weekend again in front of the fireplace, winding down from a busy weekend with family, and gearing up for the week ahead, which, according to all the notes I have, is going to include a bazillion pounds of potatoes, as I gear up for side dishes for Thanksgiving at our friends home, and then the family Thanksgiving in Fort Recovery this coming weekend.

Katy + Josh | Christmas Card Photos | Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

November 15, 2016 By //  by kate

I met Katy & Josh while photographing a wedding earlier this fall, and pretty much fell in love with them both on the spot. They are two of the most open, gregarious, loving people you’ll ever meet. When I was asked to photograph them for their Christmas card, I was through the roof.

“We didn’t know we were making memories, we just thought we were having fun”

Katy reached out a couple of weeks ago, asking if we still had time to get a session in for Christmas card photos… my response was instant, OF COURSE WE STILL HAVE TIME! I asked Katy if she had any specific ideas about their session, and we hit the ground running.

We spent last Sunday evening at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park west of Columbus, where laughter and conversation flowed like water.

The energy that these two share is magnetic and so full of love, the entire session was a dream, and I can’t wait to get them back in front of my camera again!

Weekend in Review | k.H.a.lifestyle photography | Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

November 14, 2016 By //  by kate

This was the first weekend since we moved into our home in Dublin, and really since we’ve been in Ohio that we didn’t have a list a mile long of unpacking boxes or house projects to get done.

So we decided to explore.

Friday night started with me teaching my youngest brother in law (Curt, you’re also currently my favorite brother in law) how to make a kick ass meal, with only a few slight hiccups.  Also, probably the most exciting moment of my last week, I found a store that carries Los Vasco’s wine. The wine that has long been the house red at my mom’s house, and reminds me of home, so I did what any sane rational woman would do, I bought three bottles. (which, to my credit, was less than the case that was my knee-jerk reaction to finding out here)

Saturday, Jeff woke me up asking if I wanted to try out a new coffee shop on High Street in Worthington, which turned into walking all along High street, drinking coffee and poking through the shops.  Knowing that we didn’t have anything waiting on us at home, we decided to expand our exploring up into Delaware, for more poking around and lunch.

As we drove, I hit up Yelp, (which I must say, is an app that I use on the daily, especially now that I’m exploring in a whole new part of the country) to find us a place for lunch, and we landed at Restoration Brew Worx.

KILLLLLLER good food and great beer. And hard cider.  Jeff and I took advantage of the exploring time to start to nail down details of a new project that we have in the works, as well as stopping every oh, three feet, for me to snap another photo. (Thank God for a patient husband)

Drove a couple hours up I71 to Akron, to photograph the coolest birthday bash I’ve ever seen for a fellow photographer, then back to Cbus.

Sunday brought more exploring with Jeff, this time up to Sunbury, which is a small town to the north east of the city, again poking through small shops before meeting up with my friend Heather and her family for lunch at the Firehouse Tavern for burgers and again, beer. (hey, it’s the weekend)

To wind the weekend up, I had a session at Battelle Darby Metro Park, with two of the most fun people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. They pretty much gave me creative license with their session, but more about that when I post their session’s blog.

Sunday was capped off with butternut squash soup Jeff had waiting, a big pile of blankets, a super smooshy big chair, and a roaring fire in the fireplace.

As far as weekends go, one of the best we’ve had since we moved.

Brady Bands | Short North | Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

August 3, 2016 By //  by kate

When we moved out to Ohio, one of my main goals was to get out and explore, experience all of the festivals and street markets. At the Powell Street Market this past July, I met Amy, the owner and creative genius behind Brady Bands.

She has the COOLEST collection of athletic wear, and the BEST headbands! Her line is solidly made, super comfy, and crazy stylish. We took our fantastic models downtown to the Short North, and had a ball.

These gals were such good sports, and looked absolutely fantastic.

Stay tuned for more, as Amy builds out her line!

Connor | Senior Photos | Columbus Senior Photographer

April 26, 2016 By //  by kate

Connor is graduating in the spring, from Sherwood High School, and is heading down to Oregon State!

He and I got to hang out at George Rogers Park, in Lake Oswego, to capture his senior photos.

While he wasn’t initially into the idea of senior portraits, but Mom won, and he opened up for me and we enjoyed the hour we spent together.

I hope that the rest of your senior year is fun, and that the next steps of your journey are full of adventure and laughter.

Lindsay | City Ballerina | Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

April 23, 2016 By //  by kate

I’ve known Lindsay for years, she is one of the most genuinely nice people I’ve ever met. She’s also a phenomenal dancer.

I approached Lindsay about being will to model for me about a year and a half ago, and while back  in Portland this past June, we finally got our calendars synched.

With all of the crazy of moving, and juggling everything that that entails, it was wonderful to take the time to capture these.

Also, I have a new found appreciation and HUGE respect for what a bad ass she is, watching her muscles bunch and flow as she danced up close was simply beautiful.

The Gearhart Family | Baby Sawyer | Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

April 2, 2016 By //  by kate

While I was in Portland in September I had the chance to spend the afternoon with the Gearhart family, and their son’s brand new baby boy, Sawyer.

Sawyer is such a sweet little snuggler! He snoozed through our entire session, and oh man does he love to cuddle.
