Night of Chocolate 2017 | Cancer Support Community of Central Ohio

October 11, 2017 By //  by kate

I can’t believe that it’s already been a year since I first photographed the Night of Chocolate, the fundraising gala for Cancer Support Communities of Central Ohio.  I really can’t believe that we’ve lived in Ohio for 18 months. Time seems to be going by faster and faster each year. Capturing this years Night of Chocolate was a happy anniversary of sorts for me, and I was thrilled to be ableI to capture and document it again this year.

Volunteerism is a value that we grew up with (thank you Momma, for instilling this in both Alex and I from a young age) and being able to donate my time and talents to this great organization is so much fun.

Their mission is this ::

As the largest professionally led nonprofit network of cancer support worldwide, the Cancer Support Community (CSC), including its Gilda’s Club affiliates, is dedicated to ensuring that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. CSC achieves its mission through three areas: direct service delivery, research, and advocacy. The organization includes an international network of Affiliates that offer the highest quality social and emotional support for people impacted by cancer, as well as a community of support available online and over the phone. The Research and Training Institute conducts cutting-edge psychosocial, behavioral, and survivorship research. CSC furthers its focus on patient advocacy through its Cancer Policy Institute, informing public policy in Washington, D.C. and across the nation.

I love it. I couldn’t believe in what they do more.

This 2017 Inspiration Award winner is Cheryl Eddie, who I was fortunate enough to be able to spend an afternoon with Cheryl, capturing her portraits. She is a phenomenal woman, and so beautiful, both inside and out. Watching her walk on stage to accept her award was really fun. I’m also pretty sure that I’m the only one who let out a huge whoop of excitement.

If you weren’t in attendance last year, or this one, get it on yo’ calendar for next year, and make sure you come by.

Huge thank you to Amberly, the PHENOMENAL force of nature behind Merriment.Imaging, and Dominique of DMP photography for bringing thier talents with me to capture the evening.

This is Kim // k.H.a. lifestyle photography

October 9, 2017 By //  by kate

I met Kim what feels like a lifetime ago, when our parents lived next door to each other. She and her mother are two of the kindest, most amazing woman women I’ve ever met. Ever.

While I was in Portland this summer we spent a part of an evening with our families, and I talked her into getting in front of my camera for a while, as we were having a glass of wine and catching up.

We were both having exceptionally rough days, and getting to spend those couple of hours together was amazing.

Next time, Kim, we’re doing it up for real.

The Telephone Hats a Shiree Houf Couture Collection // k.H.a. lifestyle photography

October 9, 2017 By //  by kate

I met Shiree Houf last year, at the Trash the Dress 2.0 shoot, where we both said hi, smiled, and went on with our lives. Fast forward a eighteen months or so, and through our mutual friend (y’all remember Model Valerie G) we started hanging out and sharing workspace.

Today we got together along with DaRissa Jay’scene Hayes Moore, to create the art for Shireehouf.com’s Telephone Collection page.

DaRissa is so much fun to work with, and Shiree’s designs are awesome.

These unique hats were commissioned by Stephanie Stein for the Opening Session of the 2016 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions World Library and Information Congress that took place here in Columbus.

We had a ball as we worked on these, getting together with other creative’s always leaves me feeling recharged and rejuvenated when it comes to producing my own work.

Today was no exception.

The First Annual Watermelon Picnic // k.H.a.lifestyle photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

September 21, 2017 By //  by kate

One of the biggest reasons we decided to move out to Ohio last year was that we wanted to be closer to our every growing brood of nieces and nephews. I’m about 90% that we’ve crossed in the twenties when counting them all up. Growing up, my aunts played a pivotal role in my life, coming to soccer games, swim meets, track meets, school plays, and one ill-fated attempt at a dance rehearsal. We had sleepovers, and when we were older a whole bunch of long conversations that you don’t realize at the time are shaping the adult that you’ll become, but that’s totally what’s happening. I hated that we were so far away, and that in all reality (at the time) a lot of them didn’t know who I was.

They got the concept of “Uncle Jeff is married to Aunt Kate”, and they could identify that Jeff was in fact Uncle Jeff, but when it came to knowing who I was, nope. No idea. I will never forget the moment that my then youngest niece stood with next to her mom, wrapped around her legs asking who I was. Well, says my sister in law, that’s uncle Jeff, so who’s that? Silence. Then a shy “I don’t know”.

My heart cracked a little bit at that. The chance to be more involved in the lives of this side of the family and get to be a part of thier lives? In a heartbeat.

I called my sister in law that lives here in Columbus and asked her if she’s bring my two nephews over for a watermelon and popsicle idea I had had brewing for some time. She said yes.

We got to have a backyard snack picnic, the littlest brother got to have his first popsicle, and we played. It was amazing.

Road Trip Photography | k.H.a. lifestyle photography | Columbus Lifestyle Photography

September 5, 2017 By //  by kate

This summer has been a crazy whirlwind of amazing travel, meeting all kinds of new people, and exploring AMMMMMAZING cities. I’m in the process of working on a combination coffee table book, cookbook, and road trip guide book that outlines the trip that I did this summer, starting here in Columbus heading south to Asheville, out to the South Carolina Coast, southwest to Florida, onto New Orleans, then back up through the Mississippi Delta to Memphis, through Louisville, then home again.

In 13 days.

Because I’m apparently crazy like that.

It was amazing.

My friend Alicia flew out from Oregon and went with me, and we absolutely had a ball. The only night of the trip that we had existing accommodation reservations for was the first night, in Asheville NC. Other than that, I was relying on hotels.com to get us through, using my phone to find us a room in whichever city we were staying in that night.

[Pro tip:: if you wait until after 3 pm to book your room, you’ll save yourself some money.]

The whole story of that trip will be up on Cook.Eat.Explore, so make sure to follow along over there too, as this side is going to be largely just the photos.

With that being said, here’s a sneak peek of the photography from the road trip.

Playing Dress Up Never Ends // k.H.a lifestyle photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

August 25, 2017 By //  by kate

Dress up starts at age five and never really ends. - Kate Spade
Kate Spade is my favorite designer, bar none.

Part of the magic of the  Southern Summer Road Trip was getting to to dress up my friends in GORGEOUS gowns from Trousseau Bridal, a bridal shop here in Powell. Megan Williams is the proprietor, she is an amazing person, and entrusted me with the gowns for the trip.

Alicia (the gal on the right) and I had planned to stop and shoot the different gowns more than we ended up doing, but I think that that was a part of the magic of the evening that we spent in Asheville, playing dress up in Torii’s back yard.

Yup.

You read that right.

These were shot in her backyard. It was absolutely magical, and I am IN LOVE with the images that I captured that evening.

Dusk fell as we were shooting, the fire flies started to blink and twinkle and the air was so calm, so soft, and SO incredibly still.  I can’t gush enough about these, so rather than blather on indiscriminately, I’ll let the photos do the talking for me.

Check ’em out.

Emily + Krista // k.H.a. lifestyle photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

July 13, 2017 By //  by kate

I met Emily just before Christmas, at Marcellas up on Polaris, and it was this instant click of recognition. She and I started hanging out in the winter sunlight here in Ohio and have been friends since.  I knew the first time we met that I was going to get her in front of camera, we just didn’t know when.

Emily + Krista share a big, beautiful, amazing kind of love. #columbusohio #khalifstylephotography Share on X

The love they have for each other fills the room.

This spring, we finally made it happen. (Also, Emily is a dog whipserer like you would not believe. Eddie, the dog who used to be afraid of EVERYONE took right to her, and Otis was right behind him). They don’t even relax on me they way they do with her. It’s fantastic to watch, and it happens eery time she comes over.

ANYHOW.

Watching these two interact is so cool. the love that they have for each other fills the room.  Seriously, it rubs off on everyone around them.

Krista started out in front of the camera, and the laughter started flowing. I’m tellin’ ya, thier love fills whatever room they happen to be in.

Arlo, thier furchild, who btw, has (his own Instagram.) even decided that he would let us get a few frames of him as well.  You should check it out, it’s fun to watch he and his person Emily on their adventures.

Snuggle sessions, lifestyle sessions, I love this. Being able to put people at ease enough to let down the guard that EVERYONE puts up when they get in front of a camera (professionals aside) down, and let me show them how truly beautiful they are, this is my passion.

Want to schedule a session for you and yours?

Let’s talk.

Meet Valerie // k.H.a. lifestyle photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

July 10, 2017 By //  by kate

One of my favorite things about moving to Ohio has been all of the bad ass amazing women that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, working with, and collaborating with. Enter Model Valerie G.

I met Valerie, who professionally goes by Model Valerie G, a year ago today, at the second Trash the Dress shoot that Sam Antics of Hey Pretty Beauty put on.  Trash the dress, by the way, is every bit as fun as it sounds, in this case, it was models, wedding dresses, and LOTS of colored paint in squirt guns, a whole lot of laughter, and a bunch of photographers there to capture it all.

After moving to Ohio last summer, the events feature on Facebook was my social life, and I used those events as a way to not only explore the city, but also to meet people, network for k.H.a. lifestyle photography, and generally get myself out of the apartment that we were living in at the time.

I saw the event page for Sam’s Trash the Dress Shoot Out,  signed up before I could talk myself out of it, and sent in the money for my ticket. No way I was going to let myself back out it, no matter how intimidating it was to walk into an event at which almost everyone knew each other. I am SO GLAD that I went.

Meet Model Valerie G

It was at that event that I met Model Valerie G, and I knew immediately that I wanted to work with her again. She is so full of sass, and has such an infectious smile as far as I was concerned it was a foregone conclusion. Thankfully, she felt the same way.

Meet Model Valerie G #columbusohio #khalifestylephotography #ohiophotographer Share on X

Annnnnnnnd, when I asked her if she was down to shoot a milk bath, she was all for it.  I was ecstatic.

She and I have plans to shoot together again soon, and I have about a billion more ideas of what we can create together.
