Chef Thom Stevenson // Cancer Support Community of Central Ohio

August 15, 2017 By //  by kate

When you cook, you are doing more than preparing food.  You are feeding peoples souls.

Last year I volunteered to photograph the Night of Chocolate fundraiser gala for Cancer Support Community of Central Ohio, which was fantastic, and have teamed up with them for a few more projects, which includes this years Night of Chocolate, (tickets can be purchased by clicking [HERE]) which is going to be FANTASTIC.  I had the opportunity to meet and photograph thier executive chef, Thom Stevenson.

In addition to being the executive chef for Cancer Support Community, he is a professor at Ohio University, and is all around an awesome person. He and I had a ball talking food, laughing, and talking kitchen stories.

I can’t wait to work with him again.

The Bombshells Behind The Wine & Shine // k.H.a. lifestyle photography

Do What You Love and the Money will Come
Nina, from Episdoe 20 : Don’t be Shackled to Someone Else’s Dream

Liz Garster and Nina Boyle, two women who met their freshman year of University through the random roommate program, and were truly the exception to the rule. They actually liked each other, and they still do. Amazing right?

They are the vocal duo behind the Podcast that they run, the Wine & Shine, which you can find by clicking [HERE]

The Wine & Shine Podcast

These two ladies have a passion and warmth that translates through thier podcast in a way that I didn’t expect the first time that I tuned in, and I’m hooked. You have to check them out.

We split their session into two parts, one here in the studio, and the second we shot lifestyle, and teamed up with Maddolyn Worrall, who y’all met [HERE] and is the artistic talent that joined us and kicked ass with her hair and makeup design.

The other project that they and I teamed up for was the design and photography coverage of the Live Podcast Event that they hosted here in Columbus at the WonderJam. (If you haven’t made the time yet to check them out and to meet Allie and Adam Lehman, you need to make that time. They are awesome.)

That day, under rainy Ohio late spring skies, the Live event was held.

Liz and Nina brought together three of thier earlier guests to sit down and talk.

It was an amazing afternoon, one you’ll hear more about soon.

Find Your Shine

Liz and Nina are both amazing women, who are doing big things, and are just generally bad ass women. Every time I listen to one of their episdoes I’m blown away by the insight and talent that these two have for telling others stories.

When was the last time you had your portraits done?

Let’s talk.

THIS IS COURTNEY

I met Courtney through an event at I was at through the Other side of my life, Cook.Eat.Explore .

Pretty much immediately we hit it off, and I knew that I wanted to get her in front of my camera, and wanted to capture the fun and feisty side of her personality.

So I asked her if she’d be willing to pose for me.

She said yes.

I still marvel at the light that fills this house during the day, and easy it is to pop up my backdrop stand, toss a roll of seamless paper onto it, and bam. Studio space.

This is Courtney. #khalifestylephotography #columbusohio #cbusphotographer Share on X

Courtney got here, stand went up, and we got to work. Which includes me taking a few frames to test the light, make sure that my settings are right, and gives her the chance to start to settle in and get used to the camera.  Because let me tell you it is not easy, and at first, it is supremely uncomfortable.

Enter wine.

I put a glass of wine in her hands, and really got to work.

One of the biggest beliefs I hold true, especially in my business is that I want to put people at ease, and to show me who they really are, letting me capture their personalities, not the staid portrait that you can buy at outdated anchor stores in the mall.

In order to do so, I create interaction with my clients, putting something in thier hands, something for them to fiddle with, and where appropriate, a glass of wine.

Now, before jumping all over me for encouraging my of age clients to have a glass of wine, I want you to read this article, featuring the awesome Marcos Alberti.

Then we can talk about it. Over a glass of wine.

Spending the afternoon hanging out, getting to know her more, and playing with the light that came streaming in the skylights was so much fun.

I can’t wait to have her back.

Samantha, The Cheesecake Girl // k.H.a. Lifestyle Photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photograph

March 16, 2017 By //  by kate

The other side of my professional life is as a food blogger (pretty much I’ve figured out how to combined my love of cooking, food, and photography into one endeavor, now I just need to figure out how to get it to actually pay me…)

The Cheesecake Girls Headshots #cbusphotographer #lifestylephotography Share on X

Through that venture, I’ve had the opportunity to sit down and talk food with some of the coolest people, and Samantha is one of them. Check out Cook.Eat.Explore to learn more about why she loves what she does, and how she got into it.

Head shots for The Cheesecake Girl.
Head shots for The Cheesecake Girl.

As I’m getting the post featuring her, her shop, and her story, I realized I hadn’t captured any portraits of her that I loved enough to use in the post, so, we set up a shoot.

Samantha is The Cheesecake Girl, and her cheesecakes are ammmmmmmmmazing.

We met this past Holiday Season, when I was hanging out helping a friend of mine at her booth, and we were set up next to Samantha, we consumed a fair amount of her snickerdoodle mini cheesecakes that day. (No shame.)

This shot is taken from The Cheesecake Girls Instagram Account. You can see it HERE.

We had a ball, getting her shots done in record time, as like any small business owner,  her schedule is crraaaaaaaazy. Especially as she has some BIG things in the works, really, keep an eye on her, this woman is going places.

Sam’s cheesecakes were a part of Jeff & Kim’s proposal as well, I’d called her to ask if I could order a couple from her to incorporate and she said absolutely.

This gal is so driven, so passionate about she does, and while we were shooting absolutely let me capture her personality in these head shots. She’s a ton of fun, and I cannot wait to get her back in front of my camera again.

Event Photography

.what to expect.

Event coverage is FUN. I love being able to capture the details of your event, from the fine details of the tables and decor, the Emcee, the presenters, and the signage. I love all of it.

.planning.

I’m a firm believer that in order to capture the truest emotions and the most genuine interactions, the relationship between yourselves and your photographer is hugely important. As such, I like to sit down with my clients, both long time and prospective, over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine at the end of the workday as an initial consultation for all events.

Once we’ve both decided that we’re a good fit, we’ll walk through k.H.a. lifestyle photography’s event photography contract, both signing, a retainer of 50% of your total package will be paid, and then the planning starts.

Email me your ideas, link me into your Pinterest board, or tag us @k.h.a.lifestylephotography on Instagram. Send me links to articles that has shots you like, my only goal for your day is to make sure that you love the final images. I can best serve you when I have a crystal clear idea of what you’re wanting.

.product delivery.

Once your event has been captured, it will take me no longer than two weeks to develop & finalize your gallery. Once it’s complete, we’ll have a reveal session at which you will select the images for the products you wish to order. After all selections have been made, it will be approximately two weeks until delivery.

This is where event photography can vary a bit from a normal portrait session. Depending on the coverage options and package that is built, a digital gallery may be made available as well.

Questions? Let’s sit down for a cup of coffee!

Portraiture

Photography is a way of feeling, touching, loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers the little things, long after You have forgotten everything.”

– Aaron Siskind

.what to expect.

Lifestyle portraits are unlike any other. Rather than the staid, frozen portraits of the Olan Mills era, or the frozen (and very dated) department store headshot, lifestyle portraiture captures you and your family in an everyday location, interacting naturally with each other.  (Headshots are sliiiiiightly different, but not much)

Examples can be baking cookies, reading books, working on a puzzle, crafts, the simple act of snuggling on the couch with those you love. Serious bonus if you like to play and have fun.

No matter what I’m photographing, I’m a firm believer that in order to capture the truest emotions and the most genuine interactions, the relationship between yourselves and your photographer is hugely important. Once we’ve both decided that we’re a good fit for each other (yes, you read that right) we’ll walk through k.H.a. lifestyle photography’s portrait session contract, both signing, a retainer of 50% of your total package will be paid.

Then the planning starts.

The creative process, such as it is, starts here.  I am able to best serve you at my creative best when I have a crystal clear idea of what you’re wanting your shoot to look like.

Creating portraits for y’all, it’s collaborative.

In order to ensure that we’re on the same page, your sessions mood board is developed.

Here’s where the collaboration really takes off.  I want you to email me your ideas, link me into your Pinterest board, text me screenshots, send me links to articles that have images you like. You get the jist.

.after the session.

Once your session has been captured, it will take me no longer than two weeks to develop & finalize your gallery, your reveal is scheduled at the time of contract signing.

Your reveal, at which you will select the images and finalize your fine art product order, includes light snacks, and refreshments.

Questions? Let’s sit down for a cup of coffee!
