Even Adults Need a Bedtime Routine

September 14, 2017 By //  by kate

One of the biggest changes that working for myself has brought about is how HUGELY important it is to establish a routine and then STICK TO IT. Much easier said than done. When I get going, really get going into a good work groove (you know the one, where you’re pumping out work, knocking down your to-do list like it’s nothing and you feel like you can take on the world.) I’ll finally feel like I’m at a good stopping point, look at the clock, and realize that it’s now 3 a.m.

[[A quick note (ahem*fine print*ahem) the Amazon links below are affiliate links. What that means to you is this | I’ll receive a small commission should you choose to purchase through them. Even Adults Need a Bedtime Routine

My eyelids suddenly weigh 10lbs each, and nothing I can do will keep them open. It’s easiest to make my way down the hall, fall face first into bed, and sleep until I wake up to do it all again.

I pretty quickly realized that two or three days could go buy, I’d still be wearing the same cozy clothes, I hadn’t showered, and while I’d washed my face and brushed my teeth, that’s about all I was getting done. (btw, if you’re washing your hair every day, STAAAAHP. I wash mine now three times a week, and it has never been healthier. An unintended consequence, but hey, I’ll take it)

One of the first routines I established for myself, and one that has become a cornerstone of my day is my skincare routine. (also, one of biggest realizations of whoa, I’m an adult (usually followed by “when the hell did that happen?”) Maddie, the PHENOMENAL makeup artist I work with helped get me on the right track earlier this spring, bringing over products based on her professional expertise, and lemme tell ya, ammmmmmazing.  My skin has NEVER looked better,  and by implementing a set routine, (even though the time of day that it happens at varies wildly) my body knows that it’s time to start winding down and shifting gears from the never-ending to-do list that is self-employment, to getting ready to sleep.

Heather, one of my all-time best friends, (seriously, we met playing soccer together in middle school, she was the Matron of Honor at my wedding, and is all around one of the coolest most amazing women I’ve ever known), and I were having a wine and face time date (the closest we can come to hanging out as she’s in Denver, and I’m out here in Ohio), and our conversation segued into the special kinda crazy you have to be to want to work for yourself as a creative entrepreneur. (Heather runs not one but two businesses, The Caterpillar Years, her blog, as well as Bauer Studios)

Apparently, we’re both the same kind of crazy but lemme tell you, having someone to bounce ideas off of, who really gets it, PRICELESS.

As we talked, our conversation veered towards how when we’re taking care of children, how vitally important sticking to a routine is. So when did we as adults get away from the same?

There is absolutely something to be said for maintaining routines in our personal lives, be it having dinner with our families on Sunday nights, date night with our spouses the same night every week, the same bedtime routine to wind down your day.

My getting ready routine, it’s just as important in gearing up for a meeting with a client or potential collaborator, as is winding down at the end of the night, and runs on the same principle.

Routine tells our bodies what to expect next, right? Anyone who’s spent time with little kids gets this, and anyone who’s spent measurable time around little humans knows what happens when those same little humans are away from their routines for too long. It’s not fun. For anyone.

So when did we get so busy and stuck on the task of doing that we forgot that? When did we as a collective whole get so wrapped up in everything else that we shoved aside the thought that we need to care for our selves too? SELF CARE IS SO IMPORTANT.

What’s in My Bag

Invest in products that work with your skin.
Invest in products that work with your skin.
Journal. You'll write down what you need to hear.
Journal. You’ll write down what you need to hear.
Trial and error is a thing. Trust me, it is worth it.
Trial and error is a thing. Trust me, it is worth it.

Getting ready in the morning, even when I may not see anyone other than my dogs and husband that day, tells my body that it’s time to work, it’s time get up and be productive. Call it an occupational carry over from working in professional sales, when every day meant full hair and makeup, and dress clothes. And heels. Every day.

Now, my work attire on days that I don’t have any meetings consists mainly of yoga pants, t-shirts, and chambray shirts, but be that as at it may, putting my face on every morning makes me feel better, and really, that’s what it’s about.

CHANEL LE BLANC

This isn’t one that I use every day, but rather when I am wearing less than a full face of makeup. (Think quick and out the door kind of days) It adds the perfect pop of brightening, an even base for whatever blush and powder I’m adding to it, and I’m good to go. Seriously, the days that the dark circles are really bad, this is a huge helper.

BECCA Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector

After my skincare routine, this is the first thing that I put on my face is the BECCA primer. It is AMAZEBALLS.  Hands down, best primer I’ve ever used. My face stays matte all day long, the makeup that I use stays put and feels better as it goes on.

My favorite part of it? It’s still breathable, and an added bonus, it helps me tame my crazy eyebrows.

[check it out here]

CHANEL Blush

AMMMMMMAZING. All around. I love the texture of the powder, the way it smells is amazing, and while it’s definitely not on the cheaper end of the spectrum, it takes so little on your brush and lasts all day. Wellllll worth the cost.

[check it out here]

Guerlain Timeproof Foundation

Like Chanel’s blush, Guerlain is not at the cheapest end of the spectrum, but it’s coverage and feel is well worth the money that you’ll outlay. The undertones lean towards the more rosy, which I need, especially in the winter when my olive skin tends to make me look like I’m sick.

The other point that I have to mention is this.  I get ready in the morning, deal with whatever the day throws at me, and by the time I get home and am taking off my makeup, it’s actually still there.  That staying power is pretty fantastic, especially on days that I have shoots and am sweating all day.

Sephora Bronzer

I bounce back and forth between this and NARS Laguna (really though, who hasn’t used Laguna) and love the Sephora brand just as much. As of late they have really stepped up their game, and this goes on smoothly, blends easily, and works no matter how much or how little sun I’ve gotten.

[check it out here]

MAC Bold & Bad Lash Mascara

Raise your hand if you have a slight obsession with MAC products… No one? Just me? Ok then.

MAC skin make up doesn’t work so well for me, but their eye and lip products are where it’s at. Especially when I know that I’m going to be in front of a camera, my own, or someone else’s.

I picked up the Bold & Bad Lash the last time that I was in Ulta picking up who knows what. SO glad that I did. Smooth, easy application, and the best part? The little brush that is specifically for the little lashes under your eyes.

Lancome Visionnaire & Cleanser

Maddie turned me onto Visionnaire, and I am so amazingly grateful that she did. The serum and lotion have been an absolute game changer for me, skincare wise. It smells amazing, makes my skin feel fresh and rejuvenated and rubs in remarkably quickly, so by the time that my face hits the pillow, I’m not smearing skincare into my pillowcases, I know that it’s soaked in and is working its magic.

[check it out here]

Lancome’s face wash has also become a shower staple.  You only use a tiny bit each day, so the tube will last you quite a while, again, making the slightly higher price tag well worth it.

Road Trip Photography | k.H.a. lifestyle photography | Columbus Lifestyle Photography

September 5, 2017 By //  by kate

This summer has been a crazy whirlwind of amazing travel, meeting all kinds of new people, and exploring AMMMMMAZING cities. I’m in the process of working on a combination coffee table book, cookbook, and road trip guide book that outlines the trip that I did this summer, starting here in Columbus heading south to Asheville, out to the South Carolina Coast, southwest to Florida, onto New Orleans, then back up through the Mississippi Delta to Memphis, through Louisville, then home again.

In 13 days.

Because I’m apparently crazy like that.

It was amazing.

My friend Alicia flew out from Oregon and went with me, and we absolutely had a ball. The only night of the trip that we had existing accommodation reservations for was the first night, in Asheville NC. Other than that, I was relying on hotels.com to get us through, using my phone to find us a room in whichever city we were staying in that night.

[Pro tip:: if you wait until after 3 pm to book your room, you’ll save yourself some money.]

The whole story of that trip will be up on Cook.Eat.Explore, so make sure to follow along over there too, as this side is going to be largely just the photos.

With that being said, here’s a sneak peek of the photography from the road trip.

Playing Dress Up Never Ends // k.H.a lifestyle photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

August 25, 2017 By //  by kate

Dress up starts at age five and never really ends. - Kate Spade
Kate Spade is my favorite designer, bar none.

Part of the magic of the  Southern Summer Road Trip was getting to to dress up my friends in GORGEOUS gowns from Trousseau Bridal, a bridal shop here in Powell. Megan Williams is the proprietor, she is an amazing person, and entrusted me with the gowns for the trip.

Alicia (the gal on the right) and I had planned to stop and shoot the different gowns more than we ended up doing, but I think that that was a part of the magic of the evening that we spent in Asheville, playing dress up in Torii’s back yard.

Yup.

You read that right.

These were shot in her backyard. It was absolutely magical, and I am IN LOVE with the images that I captured that evening.

Dusk fell as we were shooting, the fire flies started to blink and twinkle and the air was so calm, so soft, and SO incredibly still.  I can’t gush enough about these, so rather than blather on indiscriminately, I’ll let the photos do the talking for me.

Check ’em out.

Chef Thom Stevenson // Cancer Support Community of Central Ohio

August 15, 2017 By //  by kate

When you cook, you are doing more than preparing food.  You are feeding peoples souls.

Last year I volunteered to photograph the Night of Chocolate fundraiser gala for Cancer Support Community of Central Ohio, which was fantastic, and have teamed up with them for a few more projects, which includes this years Night of Chocolate, (tickets can be purchased by clicking [HERE]) which is going to be FANTASTIC.  I had the opportunity to meet and photograph thier executive chef, Thom Stevenson.

In addition to being the executive chef for Cancer Support Community, he is a professor at Ohio University, and is all around an awesome person. He and I had a ball talking food, laughing, and talking kitchen stories.

I can’t wait to work with him again.

Second Shooting | Amber + Elle Photography // k.H.a. lifestyle photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

August 6, 2017 By //  by kate

I met Mariah Ellenwood last summer, shortly after arriving in Ohio at a headshot swap. She and I have shot together more than once since then, and every time is so much fun.

This June, I drove out to Coshocton (which is about an hour and a half East of Columbus, and it is a BEAUTIFUL drive out there and back) to second shoot a wedding with her, walked into the room in the church where everyone was getting ready, and stopped dead in my tracks. That days bride, she was a dread ringer for my girl Erin, back in Portland. DEAD RINGER.

The entire day was filled with love, laughter, and GORGEOUS light.

The kicker? She recognized me too. Surreal doesn’t even begin to cover it.  The entire day was filled with love, laughter, and GORGEOUS light.

Also, the only wedding I’ve ever shot at which the parents of the bride went out and bought everyone Arby’s for lunch, and at which we were running so far ahead of schedule that we ended up having a 45 minute Arby’s picnic at the park in between photos. Pretty kick ass, and will be hard to beat.

Until Erin get’s married, of course.

Red Twig Farms | Ohio’s Best Boutique Peonies

August 5, 2017 By //  by kate

Red Twig Farms // VIP Event

I met the McCollough crew last year, two days after we arrived in Ohio, why my sister-in-law told me we were going to a peony farm, to pick up fresh cut flowers for the house. Sure, why not, right? At that point, I was down for pretty much anything, especially as it was still very surreal that we were finally there, we had made it. The cleaning, packing, driving, and all of the crazy chaos of moving was done. We were here. It was weird.

I took my camera along, cause hello, I don’t go anywhere without it, and I am so crazy grateful that I did.

Red Twig Farms // Farm Store

We drove just out of the city, out past New Albany to Red Twig Farms, and pulled into the gravel lot. The big ass door (seriously, it’s almost the size of the entire wall) was rolled up, every flat surface was filled with jugs and buckets of peony’s, and the light that pours into that building, so beautiful.

I made sure to ask before shooting, as I find it incredibly rude and presumptuous when photographers assume they’re allowed to shoot inside buisness’ without express permission, and as a part of that, handed my business card to Lindsay. From there? The rest is history.

This year I photographed the VIP event that they had early one misty late spring morning as well as the farm store opening, which if you haven’t been to, you’ve got to make it out next year.

There’s not such thing as too many peonies. Ever.

The peony’s themselves, huge, gorgeous, and those suckers last. Just make sure that you don’t crowd them in thier jars. I learned about that one this year.  Having the big fluffy blooms in vases scattered throughout my house all spring was the pop of color and pretty that I needed. Not to mention they made the house smell fantastic.

The Bombshells Behind The Wine & Shine // k.H.a. lifestyle photography

July 14, 2017 By //  by kate

Do What You Love and the Money will Come
Nina, from Episdoe 20 : Don’t be Shackled to Someone Else’s Dream

Liz Garster and Nina Boyle, two women who met their freshman year of University through the random roommate program, and were truly the exception to the rule. They actually liked each other, and they still do. Amazing right?

They are the vocal duo behind the Podcast that they run, the Wine & Shine, which you can find by clicking [HERE]

The Wine & Shine Podcast

These two ladies have a passion and warmth that translates through thier podcast in a way that I didn’t expect the first time that I tuned in, and I’m hooked. You have to check them out.

We split their session into two parts, one here in the studio, and the second we shot lifestyle, and teamed up with Maddolyn Worrall, who y’all met [HERE] and is the artistic talent that joined us and kicked ass with her hair and makeup design.

The other project that they and I teamed up for was the design and photography coverage of the Live Podcast Event that they hosted here in Columbus at the WonderJam. (If you haven’t made the time yet to check them out and to meet Allie and Adam Lehman, you need to make that time. They are awesome.)

That day, under rainy Ohio late spring skies, the Live event was held.

Liz and Nina brought together three of thier earlier guests to sit down and talk.

It was an amazing afternoon, one you’ll hear more about soon.

Find Your Shine

Liz and Nina are both amazing women, who are doing big things, and are just generally bad ass women. Every time I listen to one of their episdoes I’m blown away by the insight and talent that these two have for telling others stories.

When was the last time you had your portraits done?

Let’s talk.

Emily + Krista // k.H.a. lifestyle photography // Columbus Lifestyle Photographer

July 13, 2017 By //  by kate

I met Emily just before Christmas, at Marcellas up on Polaris, and it was this instant click of recognition. She and I started hanging out in the winter sunlight here in Ohio and have been friends since.  I knew the first time we met that I was going to get her in front of camera, we just didn’t know when.

Emily + Krista share a big, beautiful, amazing kind of love. #columbusohio #khalifstylephotography Share on X

The love they have for each other fills the room.

This spring, we finally made it happen. (Also, Emily is a dog whipserer like you would not believe. Eddie, the dog who used to be afraid of EVERYONE took right to her, and Otis was right behind him). They don’t even relax on me they way they do with her. It’s fantastic to watch, and it happens eery time she comes over.

ANYHOW.

Watching these two interact is so cool. the love that they have for each other fills the room.  Seriously, it rubs off on everyone around them.

Krista started out in front of the camera, and the laughter started flowing. I’m tellin’ ya, thier love fills whatever room they happen to be in.

Arlo, thier furchild, who btw, has (his own Instagram.) even decided that he would let us get a few frames of him as well.  You should check it out, it’s fun to watch he and his person Emily on their adventures.

Snuggle sessions, lifestyle sessions, I love this. Being able to put people at ease enough to let down the guard that EVERYONE puts up when they get in front of a camera (professionals aside) down, and let me show them how truly beautiful they are, this is my passion.

Want to schedule a session for you and yours?

Let’s talk.
